History

1980’s

On March 23, 1983, a TDA Advisory Committe appointed by TDA President Kennon Moffitt met to elect officers to establish the TDA Foundation. Prior to that time, the TDA had a scholarship committee, which awarded scholarships in Texas. The TDA was interested in establishing the TDA Foundation for several reasons. First, the TDA needed to separate TDA administrative money from donations for scholarships. IRS regulations "encouraged" a separate organization for that purpose so that contributions could be tax deductible. In addition, TDA wanted to model itself after the ADA, which had formed the ADA Foundation as a separate organization.

On August 23, 1983, Nell Robinson, the first Director of the TDA Foundation, mailed a letter to all district dietetic association presidents, announcing the formation of the TDA Foundation, outlining the goals of TDAF and encouraging contributions. Brenda Knowles was the first TDAF Director-Elect and Joy Dubinski was the first TDAF Secretary/Treasurer.

The first endowed scholarships for TDAF were originally TDA scholarships which were moved to the TDA Foundation in 1983-the Elmira Blecha and Mozelle Craddock scholarships. Interest from those endowed funds still provides annual scholarships.

In March 1984, the first TDA Foundation scholarships (five scholarships totaling $2,500) were awarded.

In 1987, the Big Hat scholarship was started at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas.

1990’s

By 1991, TDAF scholarships had expanded to 9 scholarships, totaling $4,500.

In 1994, Joan J. Coleman of Dumas, Texas contributed the $10.000 necessary to establish the first new endowed scholarship fund. That year, TDAF awarded 10 scholarships totaling $4,750.

In 1996, the Celeste Rocap (West Texas District Association) Endowed Scholarship was established.

In 1998, a total of 18 scholarships for $11,200 were awarded.

With a generous contribution of $10,000 by Dr. Helen Lane of Houston, Texas in 1999, the Nutrition Research Scholarship was established. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students training in nutrition research.

2000’s

In Spring 2000, a total of 23 scholarships for $15,000 were awarded: four endowed scholarships, a corporation giving two scholarships, one practice group scholarship, one interest group association scholarship, the Big Hat Scholarship, and 11 district dietetic associations (out of 18) giving 14 scholarships.

In Spring 2001, a total of 26 scholarships for $16,550 were awarded: five endowed scholarships, a corporation giving three scholarships, one practice group scholarship, one memorial scholarship, the Big Hat Scholarship, and 11 district dietetic associations (out of 18) giving 15 scholarships.  In 2001, Dr. Jane Cohen endowed the Jane Elizabeth Watkins Cohen, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., Nutrition Education Scholarship, the first endowed TDA scholarship to award $1000 annually.

There were 21 scholarship winners for a total of $21,650 for spring 2004. These funds came from the endowed scholarships along with the district annual scholarships, Computrition donated airline raffle ticket scholarship, and the Big Hat fundraiser during the annual meeting.

In Spring 2005, a total of 21 scholarships for $18,250 were awarded for the 2005-06 academic year. In 2005, Houston Area Dietetic Association established an endowed scholarship.

2006 proved to be a record breaking year and we were thrilled to have awarded 24 scholarships totaling $22,700! For the first time, the scholarships included two $1,250 scholarships given to top scholars. TDAF scholarships were funded by thirteen scholarships endowed at either the $10,000 or $20,000 level, ten TDA district affiliate contributions, the annual statewide raffle, collections from the Big Hat scholarship donations at TDA FNCE and a $1,000 donation from the Texas Consultant Dietitians for Health Care Facilities of Texas.
